I recently receive a letter from dhs child support is asking information on there father. Why would they?

need this if i reported to my worker that he is already giving me money for the children. I need to know if he would have to pay dhs back. I would rather pay it back due to at the time i was receiving istance I didn't have a job. I do now and would pay back the money.
